The Bird Kicked the Bunny’s Ass

The bird kicked the bunny’s ass.

This bothers me because the internet has spent approximately thirty years establishing that cute furry animals are its primary currency. CATS! DOGS! CAPYBARA! Entire technology companies may have been built because somebody once needed a faster way to distribute cat pictures, yet somehow my little black-necked stilt standing in a pond beat the bunny.

And it wasn’t particularly close.

So naturally Bertie and I conducted an investigation, because apparently photography now needs the same level of statistical analysis as our baseball picks.

The bird has a lot going for it. Clean lines, tons of negative space, black and white against blue, those ridiculous red legs, and then the reflection gives you another bird for free, which apparently is important in this economy. Ain’t no bird tariffs in Benzoland.

The bunny has ears. Magnificent ears, granted. Those things could probably receive AM radio from Barstow. There’s also a great eye, beautiful detail, and that whole adorable-bunny thing the internet is supposedly contractually obligated to love.

But the bunny blends into the dirt. The bird jumps off the screen.

And that’s when I realized photography apparently has its own version of handicapping. The obvious favorite doesn’t always win, and sometimes what looks better when you actually examine the matchup is different from what your brain immediately tells you should win.

The bunny was chalk. The bird was the dog.

Which brings us, naturally, to baseball.
